The end of one year and the beginning of another is a time when most of us pause to reflect on our experiences in the last 12 months – and for someone like me who is obsessed with makeup, this is the perfect time to think about one’s beauty regimen, what worked, what didn’t, what needs to be restocked, and what needs to be avoided like the plague.
Before I begin discussing what my favourite beauty products have been in 2016, I shall, of course, give the following disclaimer: different products work differently for different people. The products mentioned in this post are the ones that work well with my skin type, complexion, features, and so on. You get my point – even though I love these products, I would also understand why you would hate on them.
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Stick Foundation
I know, I know. Stick foundation = full coverage, heavy foundation not suitable for everyday use. That’s what I first thought too, which is why I was skeptical when my new best friend (a makeup assistant at Sephora) suggested I try this one out. From my very first use, I was in love – the formula is super light and creamy, which means a few strokes here and there blended in with my Real Techniques Expert Face brush gives me the perfect amount of coverage for everyday use, but I can also build it up for more heavy coverage. I am in the shade Golden, which looks like it was made for my complexion. For $25 a pop, I don’t think I’d ever want to use any other foundation for my everyday school/work look.
- Sephora Collection Blush in #23 Passionate
This peachy, shimmery blush gives my cheeks the perfect and most natural-looking flush. This looks great on medium-olive skin tones.
- Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
I think I was a little too late to jump on the Better Than Sex bandwagon… but hey, better late than never, right? I got a travel sized version because I already had two mascaras I was switching between, but since the day this got added to my makeup collection, I doubt I ever went back to either of them. The wand is densely packed, which means that one stroke (two at most) leave my lashes looking thicker and longer.
- NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in #630 Cashmere
I initially went looking for the Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk, which seems to be very popular amongst YouTubers, but came home with this instead. I use this on an everyday basis to line my lower lash line from the inner corners of my eyes to the middle of the lower lash line – NOT my waterline, as I have big eyes already and don’t want to make them look even bigger – and I personally feel that this reflects really well in my brown eyes and makes them look brighter. I also think this would serve as a great base for shimmery gold eye shadows, although I have yet to put it to that use.
- Inglot AMC Brow Liner Gel
I absolutely cannot complete any makeup look without filling in my brows, since I have very sparse hair growth unfortunately. This is my go-to eyebrow filler – using a simple Luscious Cosmetics eyebrow brush, I use the Brow Liner Gel in the shade 16 to both define my brows and fill them in.
- Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray
Regardless of how good your makeup look is, there’s no point in investing all that time and effort if that makeup is simply going to run down your face in streaks thanks to the hot and humid weather in my part of the world. This De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray has been my savior – three spritz of this product on my face in the morning allowed my makeup to last in the most humid of climates for over 12 hours! Furthermore, unlike a lot of other makeup setting sprays I’ve tried, this doesn’t cause your foundation to start looking cakey after a while, nor does it cause my skin to break out. In short, an absolute must-have for those living in hot and humid parts of the world.
